New FIGO-ICM statement on comprehensive abortion care


FIGO and the International Confederation of Midwives are delighted to share our first joint statement on comprehensive abortion care (CAC). This statement unites the guiding principles, strategic aims, policy requirements, professional standards and service actions required to ensure quality, equitable and rights-based CAC.

Thank you to the UN Special Programme of Research, Development and Research Training in Human Reproduction (HRP) for their support and technical partnership.

New UNFPA and FIGO partnership to accelerate maternal healthcare


UNFPA (the United Nations Population Fund) and FIGO have signed a Memorandum of Understanding, marking the start of a new partnership. The collaboration will improve maternal and reproductive health services in low- and middle-income countries.

Eliminating the medicalisation of female genital mutilation


In a recent blog, Dr Aparna Sridhar, Director of the FIGO Division of Sexual and Reproductive Health and Wellbeing, explains why medicalisation of FGM risks transforming a harmful practice into one perceived as acceptable, undermining decades of progress toward elimination. As health professionals, we must take a clear and unequivocal stand – refusing to perform FGM in any form, educating peers and communities and championing evidence-based approaches that prioritise the health and rights of women and girls.

Endometriosis in Guatemala: innovation and commitment


Endometriosis remains underdiagnosed and undertreated in many countries, often due to misinformation and limited awareness.

In our latest Members Spotlight, The Guatemalan Association of Gynecology and Obstetrics (AGOG) shares their commitment to endometriosis care in Guatemala, including providing institutional support to EndoGt Group, a pioneering initiative focused on the comprehensive, multidisciplinary management of endometriosis.

Updated WHO guidelines for contraception: A review


Dr Aparna Sridhar, Director of the FIGO Division of Sexual and Reproductive Health and Wellbeing, and Prof Dr Frank Louwen, President of FIGO have co-authored an article highlighting updated contraception guidances from the World Health Organization: the Medical Eligibility Criteria (MEC) and Selected Practice Recommendations (SPR).

These evidence-based guidelines include important updates on contraceptive use for breastfeeding individuals, emergency contraception and people using HIV therapies, helping expand safe and equitable access to contraception worldwide.
